Primates of the Anglican Communion — Archbishop of the Indian Ocean

The Most Rev. Ian Ernest, Archbishop of the Indian Ocean and Bishop of Mauritius.

Born on the island of Mauritius on 30 Aug 1954, Archbishop was educated at Madras Christian College in Tambaram, Madras from 1975 to 1979 earning a Bachelor of Commerce degree. After a short period in the private sector, he trained for the ministry at St. Paul’s Theological College in Mauritius and undertook further studies at WestHill College at the University of Birmingham. Ordained deacon in 1984 and priest in 1985 in the diocese of Mauritius, he serced in the parish ministry on the island until his election as 15th Bishop of Mauritius in July 2001. On 24 January 2006 he was elected Archbishop of the Indian Ocean. A member of the 2008 Lambeth Conference design team, he was elected president of the Council of Anglican Provinces of Africa (CAPA) in October 2007 and re-elected archbishop of the province in 2012. He is a member of the Global South primates group. Archbisohp Ernest is married to Kamla Ernest and they have a son, Julian.
